Visas & entry

Indian passport holders need a visa, easily obtained via Zambia's e-Visa or on arrival; many nationalities also get visa-on-arrival. The KAZA UniVisa (shared with Zimbabwe) is available at qualifying entry points for Victoria Falls travel.

e-Visa: yes · Visa on arrival: Varies by nationality

Getting around

Intercity travel uses coaches (Power Tools, Mazhandu, Shalom) and the TAZARA railway toward Tanzania; within Lusaka use blue minibuses and taxis, with Yango and inDrive operating as ride-hailing apps. Zambia drives on the left.

Car vs taxi: Self-driving is popular for safari trips on Zambia's main tarmac routes (4x4 recommended for parks and the wet season); in Lusaka, use Yango, inDrive or hotel taxis rather than driving in traffic.

Money, SIM & tipping

Money: The kwacha is used for cash and is essential in markets and for minibuses; cards work at hotels, malls and city restaurants, and Airtel and MTN Mobile Money are widely used. Carry cash outside the main cities.

SIM & data: MTN, Airtel and Zamtel are the carriers; register a SIM with your passport at the airport or a shop. Local eSIM support is limited, so a travel eSIM is a useful backup.

Tipping: Tipping around 10% is customary where no service charge is added, and safari guides, trackers and lodge staff are typically tipped at the end of a stay.

Culture & language

Etiquette: Greetings are important and unhurried, often with a handshake (sometimes supporting the right forearm with the left hand as a sign of respect). Use the right hand for giving and receiving and show deference to elders.

Food: Try nshima (maize staple) with relish, grilled or stewed meat, and fresh bream from the rivers; kapenta (small dried fish) is popular. Drink bottled or boiled water and avoid tap water in some areas.

Say hello: English — “Hello” · thanks “Thank you” · how much? “How much?”

Safety & emergency

Zambia is peaceful and welcoming, with Victoria Falls, South Luangwa and the safari circuit well-run; petty theft occurs in Lusaka, so take normal precautions and use guides in the parks.
