The continent's apex and remote frontiers
India × South Pole & East Antarctica hub ↗ All countries factsheet
south-pole-east-antarctica lies within the Antarctic Treaty System, which reserves the region for peaceful scientific use and prohibits commercial mineral extraction. There is no resident economy or conventional trade; the only "trade" is the logistics of supplying research stations — fuel, food, scientific equipment and personnel — moved by national Antarctic programmes and expedition operators.
India angle: India operates Antarctic research stations (Maitri and Bharati) and participates in the Treaty System; its interest here is scientific and logistical, not commercial.
Outlook: governed by the Treaty and its Environmental Protocol — the watch point is the periodic review of the mining ban and the growth of managed expedition tourism.
South Pole & East Antarctica uses the US dollar (expedition) (USD). Capital: Amundsen–Scott Station.
